About:

Head First Design Patterns

This is an excellent book! Having read many other books on design patterns including Design Patterns Explained by Shalloway Trott and whilst it was a good book it was rather a dry read, it didn't really flow as I expected. The Head First book although looking a bit like a Design Patterns for Dummies type book by the cover does indeed cover the same material but in a way which is definetely easy to read and hopefully better to remember.

Where this book really flys is in it's examples which clearly show you where you may wish to apply a paticular pattern which is really the key to the whole field. There may be more similar books on the market but this one explains the key patterns and more importantly the principles behind them well.

I'm a very good Python programmer and the fact it's a Java book doesn't really make a difference. The code samples are almost exactly the same as they would be in Python or any other language. On a few occasions it does make reference to paticular Java classes to show examples of patterns in use (e.g. Iterator) but it's easy enough to relate these to their .NET equivalent and even if you can't it doesn't really matter.

I thoroughly recommended this book if you want to start learning about Design patterns and their use.

Warning: this book contains some cheesy jokes and slightly wacky examples, but you will not be worried about that when you get to the last page and realise that virtually all of it is stored securely in your mind.

Highly Recommended.

About the Author(s)

Eric Freeman is enjoying taking all the pixie dust from his four years as a Disney executive and applying it to his passion, computer science. He recently co-authored Head First Design Patterns for O'Reilly (and never had so much fun). He previously co-authored JavaSpaces: Principles Patterns and Practice. Before Disney, Eric worked closely with his mentor, David Gelernter, on technology and startups. Eric holds a Ph.D. from Yale University in Computer Science and has been honored by an MIT TR100 award, as a top technology innovator.

Elisabeth Freeman is coauthor of O'Reilly's Head First Design Patterns and Head First HTML with CSS & XHTML. She is currently a Director of Technology at the Walt Disney Internet Group where she is focusing on driving technology development for community and content applications.

Bert Bates is a 20-year software developer, a Java instructor, and a co-developer of Sun's upcoming EJB exam (Sun Certified Business Component Developer). His background features a long stint in artificial intelligence, with clients like the Weather Channel, A&E Network, Rockwell, and Timken.

Kathy Sierra is the coauthor of Head First Java and Head First EJB. She has been interested in learning theory since her days as a game developer. More recently, she's been a master trainer for Sun Microsystems, teaching Sun's java instructors how to teach the latest technologies to customers. Her current gig, along with her partner Bert Bates, is developing and producing the bizarre new Head First series of books for O'Reilly. She's also the original founder of javaranch.com, which came dangerously close to winning a Jolt Cola award last year, but had to settle for the computer equivalent of being the Miss America runner-up (winning the Software Development Magazine Productivity Award instead).
