About:

Pragmatic Version Control Using Subversion

The strength of this book is that it describes in words that even a developer can understand what the whole point of a change management system is. Using imaginary scenarios, the author describes how version control can save the day. This would be patronising or manipulating if it wasn't for the simple fact they all ring true.

Version management is a technology worth using, and subversion is a free and open source system that is very attractive proposition. Then the book moves on to practical topics and we rapidly discover that Subversion is a common line application and this is were the story goes a little sour. It doesn't integrate with your favourite IDE, and in fact it doesn't really integrate with your favourite operating system.

If you are happy with command line applications then you might find Subversion something you want to use and hence find the examples and details in this book useful. On the other hand if you're like me your mind turns to how easy it might be to create GUI interface or an IDE integration. However, if you are using or want to use Subversion this book is essential reading.
