Regular Expression Pocket Reference

- Tony Stubblebine

A few years ago I read "Mastering Regular Expressions" (a much heavier book compared to this volume) cover to cover and loved every page. It's a great book, readable and filled with detailed explanations but within a few months almost all I had learnt was completely gone. This is a very high level topic in software development, and in my opinion, it should be classified as a progrmming language in its own right!

That is where this pocket reference comes in. The perfect tool to quickly jog your memory and remind you of that unusual rule. If you're new to regular expressions I'd recommend "Mastering Regular Expressions" first but, if you can, buy both. You won't regret it..

Unlike some other pocket books, this isn't just a reference, but contains lots of small tutorials to get your writing your own applications fast without any lengthy materials to cover. What makes this hand book great is that it contain code written in different programming languages from Java to C#, to PHP, Ruby and Python.

With all these sample code, you can never go wrong. You could well consider many of the topics as something important in their own right that just that just happen to have an expression in Java, C#, Python and Ruby. It isn't possible to recount every subject covered, but the broad areas are: introduction to Regexes and Pattern Matching Regex Metacharacters, Modes, and Constructs Supported Metacharacters Regular Expression Operators Unicode Support .

If you want to get something done very quickly without any beating around the bush - this is the book to have. However, if you are new to Regular Expressions, I would suggest you get the Mastering Regular Expressions first. Mastering Regular Expressions teaches everything from the group up about regex and its the ultimate material on regex. Highly recommended.
